Five years ago today the world changed. America was attacked, and the course of human history was forever altered. As we solemnly mark the five-year anniversary of September 11, 2001 and reflect upon the heartbreaking events of that awful day, we must reaffirm our sincere promise that “We will never forget.”
We will never forget the heroes of Flight 93. We will never forget the valor of first responders who rushed into the World Trade Center buildings time and time again – many sacrificing their own lives to save others. We will never forget those who simply went to work in the twin towers and never made it home. We will never forget those lost at the Pentagon. We will never forget the innocent people who boarded four flights that would never arrive at their destinations.
And we will never forget the courageous men and women of our armed forces and law enforcement, past, present and future, who continue to protect us from ever having to experience a tragedy like that again.
We will never forget those who lost their lives that day. Today – and every day – we remember their sacrifice.
As you join with us in remembering, as you too mourn and as you too honor the victims that died five years ago today, please join us in once again promising that “We will never forget.”

Now some of you may be thinking “why is this guy so negative about working in a big corporation.” well, to prove to you that I don’t think that it is necessarily a bad thing, here are my top reasons why it’s good to have a job in Corporate America (If you don’t care for the cut and dry serious views, just scroll down to the ”slackers”section below):
1) Flexible hours (Flex 40) or if you’re lucky enough a 9/80 (every other Friday off) or 8/80 (every Friday off) work week.
2) The steady paycheck gives you a reason to wake up at 6:30 in the morning, while attempting to have a possible semi-productive day (depending on your definition of productive).
3) Almost guaranteed pay raise/bonus (except for sales)
4) Surely but slowly, career growth, depends on how much effort you put forth, but it’s fairly straight forward and linear.
5) A semi-stress free work environment
6) Employee Stock options (potential company matching) and 401k (for now at least).
7) College Tuition reimbursement.
8) Corporate Benefits (Employee Purchase plans, gym memberships/reimbursements).
9) Several weeks of paid vacation/sick leave.
10) Possible Breakfast Friday’s (Breakfast Burritos, Donuts or Bagels).
11) Meeting your future spouse at work is better than meeting them at a bar.
12) It gives you a reason to look forward to the weekend.

2) If you really cared about your job, you could put your entire department out of job, but even then, the pay wouldn’t be worth putting forth the extra effort or dealing with the extra responsibility.
3) Can you say three day weekends and holidays!!!
4) Using your sick days wisely, preferably in combination with off Fridays and holidays, let’s hear it for not working for a whole week.
5) Long Lunches, mandatory 1 hour lunches, possibly longer on Fridays.
6) For the smokers, smoke breaks, every hour for a minimum of 10 minutes.
7) Make your tasks seem harder than they really are, even though all your do is data management; which is basically burning cd’s/dvd’s all day and slapping corporate logo’s on them; while occasionally responding to work related emails (fun times).
8) Bullsh*t meetings, now lets waste everyone’s time, who doesn’t love the fact that you’re still trying to solve the same problem you were having 14 months ago; way to make progress (Now that’s job security!).
9) Internal Corporate Instant Messenger, best idea ever and whichever CEO gave the “go ahead” on that decision, finally earned their paycheck with that one.
10) It is pretty satisfying to “borrow” office supplies from work.
11) Mail your eBay items via corporate courier, discount shipping!
12) Casual Friday aka Slacker Friday (t-shirts and jeans, if it were up to you, it’d be a robe, slippers and underwear).
13) Possible Breakfast club Friday’s (Breakfast Burritos, Donuts or Bagels), it beats the hell out of the roach coach, mmmmm what’s in this again???
14) Listening to people ramble on about absolutely nothing, or how “this place used to be different” and how you need to get out while you can (save yourself).
15) Giving your co-workers nicknames (K-Man, T the crazy arse gibberish spewing Janitor and of course H.F.G.= Hairy Fat Guy and who doesn’t love them!) and also being convinced that some of your co-workers are actually robots, like Salami-Bot 5000 and the kanobot.
16) You can only open so many emails with attachments and forwards in one day, but for some strange reason,LoLcats never get old…
17) Let’s be honest, it is basically like high school and there is plenty of gossip to get involved in.
18) Office Pranks, how else are we suppose to kill time on those never ending Fridays.

As we can see there are some major differences, but several similarities between the two lists, a few things we have learned: You can’t go wrong with a steady paycheck, free food, paid leave and lack of responsibility.

Here’s a question for you: why is it that no matter what day of the week it is, whenever you
run into someone in the office you always ask them “so what are you up to this weekend?”
It might not be that exact question of course; if it is a Monday or Tuesday it might be “So
what did you do this weekend?” Are we so bored at work that all we can ever think about is
what we do when we are not at work, maybe we should try to convince management to move to the 5 day weekend schedule instead? The thing is, this has become our default question for any situation in the office, especially in the early morning and those last few tedious hours on Friday afternoon; usually spent day dreaming about weekend activities anddelicious weekend foods.

Has this one ever happened to you (I’m sure it has, as the real question should be who hasn’t it happened to and consider yourself lucky)? You are at work and minding your own business, maybe you’re even just walking through the hallway to get to a meeting and you run into someone whose name you can’t quite remember (Just look for the corporate leash). Then they start with the usual pleasantries and you are now officially obligated to somewhat par-take in their conversation and now you begin to start crying on the inside…
What do you talk to them about (Odds are you’re just looking to move on with the rest of your day and don’t really care to hear their life story about how they alphabetically sorted all their favorite 1980′s video tape commercials over the weekend and found a NIB Amanaman via Ebay!)?
There is really only one thing to do: ask them about the weekend…
Here’s the thing, no matter whom you are talking to, you really don’t even have to listen. You could care less what the creepy guy in accounting did the previous weekend. Your reaction is always the same: polite head nod, maybe a smile and don’t forget the courtesy laugh. You don’t care, yet you ask the question anyway. Why do we do this, we already know what the outcome will be; do we really enjoy partaking in this self perpetuating cycle of hate?
Ok, we all know corporate America and for those who don’t; consider yourself blessed and praise to the FSM that you never have to deal with that realm ever!
Now, corporate america is not a complete blunder or loss, you can actually learn real tools to take onto other jobs/professions/careers, I present to you:
The WhiteBoard/WhitePaper aka the War Room(WB/WP/WR).
Much like anything else, there can be too much of a good thing, so in this case stick to the KISS principle and toss out any people with very little to offer (Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen is a bad thing and in my kitchen I am head Chef), initially, since we’re trying to Map out a Plan of attack. So no more than 3-5 people, even with those numbers it’s like having 1.5 to 3 solid fully functioning brains due to group thinking…
The WB/WP/WR is used to help lay out your teams idea & focuses from entire business plans, marketing plans, or just plain ol good brainstorming, so pick up a pen and start writing. If you don’t have a rolling whiteboard or a room like this at Mindlab (more cool workplaces):
Just go ahead and grab a good section of banner paper
Cut to size (4-6ft in length)
Painters tape (other tapes run the risk of removing the paint)
Place the tape in the corners and center (top and bottom)
Now you’re all set, if you have the “carpeted walls” just do the same thing with pushpins.

I personally found a few of the levels very challenging to hit three stars on, but eventually I managed to master every level. I found the game while I was in Japan on a backpacking trip, and I have to say that it definitely passed the time while I was riding the bullet trains. All in all, Angry Birds is a testament to the power of the consumer to reward app developers for creating a quality game. Rovio Mobile has been compensated far beyond what they expected when they set out to make this game and I think it is the curious combination of cute graphics, addictive gameplay and the perfect twist on an old game type that made this game really take off. Plus, once it hit a certain critical mass it just tipped and everyone and their mother began to buy it. I knew it was huge as soon as my grandmother was telling me about this “bird pig game” that she found and how much fun she was having playing it!
If you’re paying off credit card debt, one of the most motivating things is getting a card completely paid off and crossing it off your list of outstanding debts.
Once you’ve done this it can be tempting to start charging on that card again, so a lot of people cut up the card or cancel the account entirely.
Cutting up the credit card may help you avoid spending more money on it, but canceling the account completely can actually damage your credit score in some cases.
Check your credit history
One of the factors that is used by the credit reporting agencies to calculate your free credit report is the amount of outstanding debt you have relative to the total amount of credit you have available to you.
So let’s look at an example…
Let’s say you have two credit cards, one with a credit limit of $3000 and one with a credit limit of $5000. You have just finished paying off the card with the $3000 limit and the card with the $5000 limit has an outstanding balance of $4000.
So your total outstanding debt is $4000, with $8000 in credit available to you in total. So you have a 50% debt/credit ratio.
Now if you cancel the $3000 card, you still have $4000 outstanding but only $5000 total credit available. That means your debt/credit ratio jumps to 80%.
So for the purposes of calculating your credit score, the component that this calculation is used for has jumped from 50% to 80% outstanding debt. If all else is equal, this will most likely cause your credit score to drop.
You would be better to keep that credit card active – but stop using it – until you have paid off the other card as well. At that point, canceling one of the cards will not hurt your score since you wouldn’t have any outstanding debt, meaning the ratio will be the same no matter how much total credit is available to you.
This is a simplified example, since most people will have other debts and credit available to them, but it shows how canceling a zero-balance card can affect your overall financial health.
