Reduce credit card debt and improve your credit score

If you’re paying off credit card debt, one of the most motivating things is getting a card completely paid off and crossing it off your list of outstanding debts.

Once you’ve done this it can be tempting to start charging on that card again, so a lot of people cut up the card or cancel the account entirely.

Cutting up the credit card may help you avoid spending more money on it, but canceling the account completely can actually damage your credit score in some cases.

Check your credit history

One of the factors that is used by the credit reporting agencies to calculate your free credit report is the amount of outstanding debt you have relative to the total amount of credit you have available to you.

So let’s look at an example…

Let’s say you have two credit cards, one with a credit limit of $3000 and one with a credit limit of $5000. You have just finished paying off the card with the $3000 limit and the card with the $5000 limit has an outstanding balance of $4000.

So your total outstanding debt is $4000, with $8000 in credit available to you in total. So you have a 50% debt/credit ratio.

Now if you cancel the $3000 card, you still have $4000 outstanding but only $5000 total credit available. That means your debt/credit ratio jumps to 80%.

So for the purposes of calculating your credit score, the component that this calculation is used for has jumped from 50% to 80% outstanding debt. If all else is equal, this will most likely cause your credit score to drop.

You would be better to keep that credit card active – but stop using it – until you have paid off the other card as well. At that point, canceling one of the cards will not hurt your score since you wouldn’t have any outstanding debt, meaning the ratio will be the same no matter how much total credit is available to you.

This is a simplified example, since most people will have other debts and credit available to them, but it shows how canceling a zero-balance card can affect your overall financial health.

Who doesn’t love angry birds?

No application for the mobile platform has taken a hold of the collective consciousness as much as Angry Birds.  It’s such a simple game that happened to absolutely explode onto the scene early in 2010 that has managed to sell an astonishing twelve million copies.  Twelve million copies!  That’s more than any other app that has ever been sold in the Apple App Store!

Angry Birds Title Screen

Angry Birds!

What makes the game so successful?  What are the secrets behind Rovio Mobile, the company behind Angry Birds, that make the game so addicting and fun to play?  Well, first off it is a very addictive game just based on the style itself.  You are the controller of a slingshot that launches birds at structures that contain pigs.  Sounds totally silly but trust me, it’s extremely fun.  The goal is to score as many points as possible while destroying all of the pigs.  In your arsenal are various types of birds that can perform different flight maneuvers like the classic parabolic flight path, a boomerang shot and a divebomb attack.
It’s up to you to figure out how to best use these birds to achieve your goal of destroying the evil piglets that have plagued you for so long.  It doesn’t just end there, though.  You have the option of continuing a level until you can achieve the vaunted “three star” level.  This means that you have hit the target score for mastery of a particular level.
I personally found a few of the levels very challenging to hit three stars on, but eventually I managed to master every level.  I found the game while I was in Japan on a backpacking trip, and I have to say that it definitely passed the time while I was riding the bullet trains.  You can only look at rice fields for so long before you want to mix it up and engage your brain in something that passes the time a little bit quicker.  Angry Birds managed to do that and then some.  I would often find myself lost in the game as I rode around the Tokyo train loop over and over again, only to find that I’d passed my stop three or four times while trying to master one of the more difficult levels.
All in all, Angry Birds is a testament to the power of the consumer to reward app developers for creating a quality game.  Rovio Mobile has been compensated far beyond what they expected when they set out to make this game and I think it is the curious combination of cute graphics, addictive gameplay and the perfect twist on an old game type that made this game really take off.  Plus, once it hit a certain critical mass it just tipped and everyone and their mother began to buy it.  I knew it was huge as soon as my grandmother was telling me about this “bird pig game” that she found and how much fun she was having playing it!

Asbestos – still a silent killer.

We have all seen those commercials on the television that ask if you are suffering from an obscure disease in big block letters. While most of these don’t apply to many of us, there is a small set of the population to whom these ads are scarily appropriate. One of these ads is for mesothelioma, a deadly cancer of the lungs that is sadly quite preventable provided you know what the main causes are.

mesothelioma of the lungs

What it looks like.

If you have ever worked in a construction or manufacturing environment and were exposed to asbestos, you should seek a mesothelioma lawyer immediately to make sure you know your rights. There are a lot of different rules and regulations that are now in place to protect those who have worked in these situations because of how much is now known about the dangers of asbestos.
While in the past the government and the construction and manufacturing industry didn’t do much to stop the abuse of mesothelioma, that has changed in recent years. It was shocking to read that the big wigs in corporations and government knew about the problems with asbestos for decades before word even got out to the public. The deaths were explained by other factors that had nothing to do with asbestos and the public went along with it until it was apparent that there was something wrong with the picture.
Because of the massive use of asbestos in the 1950s and 1960s, there are many boomers approaching retirement that may be entitled to compensation for the misrepresentation of the asbestos problem during that time. They should contact a lawyer for mesothelioma as quickly as possible to see if any of the new statutes apply to their unique situation – and the chances are pretty good that they do. There was simply so much asbestos being used in the last one hundred years that anyone who worked in shipyards, home construction or even general manufacturing was likely to be exposed.

These are the professions with the highest levels of risk. If you think you may have had a one time exposure to asbestos particles then there is probably not much to worry about. It is the constant inhalation of the microfibers that is the real source of danger and cause of concern. Without that, your body will likely handle the foreign particles as it would anything else it gets in small doses and you should be fine. Of course, there are cases of mesothelioma where the patient has no memory of ever working in the environments mentioned above. These are very rare cases (and mesothelioma is a rare cancer in the first place) but these people should also find  mesothelioma lawyers to see what their options are. Thankfully there are legal professionals out there who are dedicated to this specific niche of medical and contract law. Without their very specialized expertise there could be a lot more people that die or are forced to use their life savings to pay off a disease that they should never have gotten in the first place.

How are solar panels made?

While solar power has been around for many decades now, it is only in recent years that the technology has progressed to the point that they can be produced cost-effectively and using technology that makes solar power a real, viable alternative to other energy sources for the home consumer.

learn how to make a solar panel now

Modern high-tech solar panels are produced using different types of silicon. In a delicate operation, manufacturers take sheets of silicon in crystal form (a type of glass basically) and cut it into small, thin disks which are then highly polished and coated.

Following this the extremely thing silicon disks are coated with material that makes them react to sunlight in a way that releases an electrical charge – this is the process whereby the light is converted into electrical power.

They are then arranged carefully across the panel and covered by a protective sheet of glass. This gives us the end product that looks like the solar panel layout we are surely all familiar with by now. For those that are interested you can purchase most of the components that make up solar panels very easily so learning how to make a solar panel is actually quite simple these days.

With the amount of research and develpment happening in the solar energy industry right now amazing new production techniques and materials are always being developed. One ground-breaking development has been made by a team at Caltech (one of the leading technology innovation institutions in the world). Researchers there claim to have found a way to make solar panels using affordable plastics that are actually flexible.

Not only that but these new plastic, bendable solar panels are even better at absorbing light than traditional glass panels. This is amazing news because the more effecient panels are at converting light the more useful they are, combine this with better affordability and a more versatile material and this could really revolutionize how we use green energy. Imagine a car wrapped in flexible solar panels over every surface? It could be entirely powered by the sun – no gas, no emmissions, no need to plug it in and recharge from the power grid every single night.

Find out more about how solar panels are made with this youtube video:

Before we get too excited it is worth noting that this research is still in the very early stages, they have only made quite small panels out of this material so far – but the potential is amazing and there is a realistic chance that this new type of panel could enter commerical production at some stage and be used to cover our cars, the roof of your house, anywhere sunlight is found.

Penny Stocks – Part Of Your Balanced Portfolio?

Over the years there has been much talk about whether stocks offer the greatest rate of return out of any kind of asset class.  Maybe real estate is the way to go, or perhaps bond markets.  Even more say that precious metals and hard assets are the only “true” measure of wealth as you can hold them in your own hand and no one is going to stop valuing them anytime soon.  While all of these people may have good points, there is an asset class that people tend to ignore for the most part – penny stocks.

Profitable returns with some penny stocks

Wish your shares did this every day?

With penny stocks you have a couple of great advantages.  First and most important you have a low barrier to entry.  These stocks are very cheap, typically trading at or under a dollar per share.  Most of them trade under ten cents a share!  That means with 10 bucks you can pick up 100 shares of a company and actually participate in the market to get your feet wet.  It’s an exciting feeling to make that first trade and jump in headfirst.  In no time at all you’ll be an expert at reading the movements of your portfolio over time and you will most likely gain a sixth sense about the market and all of the different timings.

Online trading.

Trading in Penny Stocks online.

The second great advantage of penny stocks is that they have the potential for a huge return.  Because they’re priced so low, any increase in the price of the stock corresponds to a higher percentage jump than any other stock out there, especially those trading at or above $100 per share.  When your penny stock jumps around even five cents that could be a 30% gain on the day for you.  Depending on how much money you have invested, a 30% gain could mean a $30 day or a $3000 day.  It’s all up to you in how much you want to invest.
It’s recommended to start off slow, especially if you haven’t traded in the past.  Penny stocks are like the “wild west” of the equities market and they are not for people with weak stomachs.  They have that large upside potential but also a large downside potential – even the risk of being completely liquidated and leaving you with nothing at all.  This is what you sign up for when you play with penny stocks and it’s what makes them so exciting to trade in my opinion.

I don’t think I could live without trading penny stocks after getting into the game a few years ago and making quite a nice return for me and my family.  Now, I’m not about to go and buy a mansion with the money but it’s great spending cash for vacations, toys and any kind of electronic gadgets I might want to buy.  Sometimes I even use the cash to purchase products from the companies I invest in to do even more market research and get a better feel for what’s really going on with the company.  It’s just one small part of the obsession I have had with penny stocks for years now!

The health effects of pregnancy

There are few things out there as magical as pregnancy.  It’s such a wonderful time of growth and joy in a woman’s life that sometimes we get lost in the whole process and forget to step back and appreciate it for what it is – the creation of a new life.  Looking at pregnancy week by week is a great way to take things one step at a time so we can truly understand this amazing experience.

the stages of pregnancy week by week
There are three distinct periods of pregnancy that a woman will go through.  These are known as the trimesters and each of them lasts around three months long.  The second trimester is particularly interesting because it is the period of time where women actually have the most energy and are most excited and vibrant.  It begins around week thirteen or so and moves into the third trimester around week twenty eight.
Unfortunately this is the time where women tend to put on a lot of weight in order to have the nutrients available to feed the baby or babies that they are carrying.  It might be inconvenient for the mother but a growing baby needs these vital nutrients as it has no way of feeding itself – the mother is responsible for the nutrition and health of her baby.
One of the major benefits of entering the second trimester is the fact that morning sickness tends to die off at around week thirteen.  No more throwing up every single morning is probably part of the reason that the second trimester tends to be the most energetic of the three.  I know that personally when I had my child this was one of the biggest reliefs of making it through the first trimester into the second.

second trimester already?
Another reason that the second trimester is such an amazing time in your pregnancy is because this is when the baby starts to actually move around in your body.  It starts to take on a life of its own and begins to kick around in the uterus and take on the sexual organs of a male or female.  It is said that at this point the baby is truly its own entity as there are plenty of cases where a child has survived an emergency pregnancy in the second trimester.  While not optimal, it has happened in the past.
Additionally, the fetus actually takes on a lot of the functions that the mother was providing for it in the past.  It has the ability to create insulin to regulate its own blood sugar levels as well as the ability to urinate to clear its body of the waste products that consuming food has created.
Looking at pregnancy week by week is a great way to understand things as they happen instead of trying to front load all of the information at once.  It is already overwhelming enough to go through pregnancy in the first place  - there is no need to stress out about what’s going to happen in week 30 when you’re only in week 10.  Take it slow and you’ll be just fine.
